I just watched Uncle Boonme which I really liked and the slow pace / gorgeous shots style made me want to watch Stalker again, or maybe I'll finally watch Mirror.

Roadside Picnic is the one SciFi novel I see mentioned endlessly yet doesn't sound shitty. I should read it someday.

the copy I have opens with a foreword by Ursula Le Guin so I'd say that's a good sign.

That is a good omen, at least. Another is that the book's friends typically seem to be able to say something more interesting than merely just affirming that they indeed enjoyed it or explain that they happen to be true fans or repeat work's ideas as if they were obviously both true and profound, like Ender's Game fans seem to do making that whole Orson Scott Card being racist more grotesque.
