this is 100% a scene from their rendition of the hounds of baskerville. This is supposed to be a scene where sherlock uses his mind palace (ie a spatial system for organizing ideas that is an actual thing) and he's going through all the semi-connected things that happened so far.

yeah it's cheesy and not the best.

what the hell even was that?

his mind palace

context b/c it's actually sort of cool:

there's this thing called the "method of loci", where you imagine things you need to remember as physically residing in a building

so, sherlock is puttng his memories in a M I N D P A L A C E and bragging about it

TBH this was one of the less bad things in Sherlock

Theoretically, this isn't a bad idea. Like, you should objectify and show plot important elements because it's not very interesting to just watch a man looking thoughtful and then working out what to do. But then the execution of this is fuckin overedited garbage. It doesn't add to Sherlock's characterisation, it doesn't do anything clever, it's just a pattern of colours and shapes with a heinous soundtrack.

i agree, this is about as good as a mind palace scene is going to get and this is the episode where they spend more time talking about how sherlock's mind works so it makes sense for them to spend some time trying to show his method.

of course they could've actually tried to make it make sense logically and as something a smart person would do with the facts in their head. but scribbling out words is easier.

I would have actually physicalised the mind palace itself and had sherlock walk around and move through it and look at things and maybe even talk to people. Then you get to see how the internals of his mind work and how his perceptions distort stuff etc.

that's an objectively better way of doing it; but i don't think that was ever really in the cards because it'd be a whole huge thing to make and they'd have to go back to the same place whenever they did it in the future.

that being said they prolly already have sets for westminster abbey or something similarly ridiculous for him to use as his palace.

I AM WHEEZING OH MY GOD

[–]anand 4 points5 points ago

you have to be willing to look silly in order to get the sweet memory lifehacks that sherlock has

my favourite sherlock scene is the one in the most recent episode where john is chained to the bottom of this well by his ankle, right

he is chained to the bottom of the well. it is slowly filling up with water.

how do they get him out?

by throwing him a rope.

which he climbs up. and out of the well. i wish i was making this up but this legitimately happened in a flagship bbc show

omg that's incredible
