I think the original way to do it was to use some sort of grease.

I would say moustache wax, probably based on beeswax at that point in time.

Seemingly we're both correct. I remember reading that Marge Simpson like hairdos were historically done with solid fat and that supposedly they had the tendency to smell, but this is from a newspaper article that I read like a decade ago so I wouldn't put much trust into it.
