In the US it's late evening (9pm pacific, 12pm eastern) afternoon in Japan (2pm) and early morning in Europe (5am in London). It's kinda weird but I also love it lol.

Having grown up on every Nintendo system since the GBC and N64, this is the first time I'm not automatically hyped for Nintendo sight-unseen, I'm still on the fence about whether or not I'll buy one. At least at launch I guess, maybe I probably will end up getting one after a price drop or something.

For like the past two years or so there have just been almost no games I've cared about - Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Pokemon Sun. That's all I've played in two years, my 3DS and Wii U have just been gathering dust since then. I don't know if Nintendo's gone to shit, if I'm old and jaded, if my tastes have simply shifted away from what they've been doing, or if maybe after the Wii U bombed they've just been pushing projects back to Switch to surprise us all with a strong launch this time.

Ultimately my biggest concern here is that I'd be buying a system for a small handful of first-party titles and nothing else. After two generations of hardware that simply wasn't powerful enough to run third-party games, I certainly can't see a tablet changing that.

I've heard conflicting rumors about whether or not the Switch is also replacing the 3DS or if there'll be another dedicated handheld later. I think the Switch really has to be that to stand a chance, the only third party titles it could get are ones designed for handheld, and just consolidating Nintendo's first-party library onto one platform makes it a much more attractive offer. But if that turns out not to be the case, I think another handheld will completely cannibalize it.

And when it comes to the Switch vs. another handheld, the jack of all trades design looks more like a master of none. We've established that the specs aren't good for a console (again), but as a handheld I don't like it too much either. Won't fit in my pocket, battery life probably won't be great, and worst of all no d-pad on the joycons. I almost exclusively used my Wii U Off-TV just curled up in bed with the Gamepad, but now it's going to be so awkward trying to do that with both the tablet and the separate controller that has a proper d-pad. Even worse trying to play it on the go. Really, I just want nothing to do with those damn joycons.

We'll see if there are any surprises tonight that win me over I suppose.

Between Rhythm Heaven Megamix, Picross 3D Round 2, Dragon Quest VII, and SMTIV Apocalypse I've played so much 3DS this year, and I'm not even mentioning small stuff like Pocket Card Jockey and the new Streetpass games.

I've mentioned before that I don't think the power is gonna be a problem for the Swtich, that power problem you mention means the battery life should be pretty good. It's all balanced nicely and I think it's gonna be great for curling up with!

They may not be pushing PS4/XB1 specs, but just trying to beat the Wii U (it can't be weaker than that, right? Right?) would have to be pretty demanding on the battery.

And I still can't curl up without a damn d-pad.

So here's the thing though. The Wii U runs on a PowerPC processor, which is a beast when it comes to sucking up battery. That's actually one of the main reasons (along with heat generation) that Apple switched from PowerPC computers to x86 back somewhere around 2005-2007.

The Tegra on the other hand, which is what the Switch will use a customized version of, is an ARM processor. ARM is like the exact opposite end of the spectrum from PowerPC for battery efficiency, and is what most mobile devices run on. Additionally, ARM CPUs are improving on battery efficiency with every generation, as is li-ion battery technology. The Tegra is made by NVIDIA who iis very performance-conscious about theier chip. So theorietically Nintendo could be in a position to beat the Wii U and have better battery life... if they do it right that is.

Mobile graphics have come to a point where a portable with Wii U level power isn't just possible, it's conservatively speced. It's definitely beating the Wii U when docked, and likely is when undocked.

It'll vary by game, but they've confirmed BotW gets 3 hours of battery. Alright for curling up with a charger nearby, but for taking on the go not so much.

ALSO THE PRO CONTROLLER IS FUCKING $70. $70 FOR MY DAMN D-PAD FUCK YOU NINTENDO.

The weirdest rumors I've seen are for a new Bomberman game.

I would love a new Bomberman RPG, however unlikely that is.

This would require Konami to make a videogame and they can't be trusted to do that.

I'm not even getting one (no $) and I have 0 interest in anything except metroid (of which I have 0 hope for) but I'm still extremely hyped.
