That's a really old figure, I think we're paying 40 a month? Grey would know.

[–]trimalchio 6 points7 points ago

omgomgomgomg celebrity sighting!

we were juuuust talking about how we miss you! :D

[–]srsly 6 points7 points ago

yes that is what compelled me to post.

[–]trimalchio 7 points8 points ago

i'm glad to know that you're watching over us like a guardian angel who also fixes the site when it breaks.

[–]srsly 1 point2 points ago

yes that except for the second part

[–]trimalchio 1 point2 points ago

then who keeps fixing itttttttt???????????????????

no srsly srsly, i srsly need to knowwwww

[–]srsly 1 point2 points ago

it usually gets better if I hope it gets better long enough

[–]trimalchio 1 point2 points ago

this is probably how they do it over at the other site too

[–]smart4301 4 points5 points ago

could someone tell me about raddit I've never heard of it

[–]KarlMarx[S] 0 points1 point ago

[–]onononon 0 points1 point ago

This site can't be reached :(

[–]toasthaste 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't be opposed to merging as long as we can still shitpost freely and even be gross liberals sometimes, but I do worry about the potential culture clash.

[–]KarlMarx[S] 2 points3 points ago

We could do with more shitposting liberals over there. We're too insular.

MERGER MERGER MERGER

The vibe comes off pretty intense over there. I am an anarchist but it's not all I want to talk about and that site gives me the sense of a lot of places on the internet: that it's just going to end up being a bunch of people accusing each other of being leftists liberals and competing to be the most radical. Which is fine they're welcome to do that but it's exhausting.

I like this site because most people are on the same page W.R.T. leftist stances but we don't really argue about it that much.

Edit: whoops wrong word

[–]toasthaste 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, like, we all agree enough on the big picture stuff to get along well, but we don't really get into the fine details here, and I think specifics are often where a lot of infighting stems from. That said, I doubt I'd really ever step outside of dorknet if it was over there, so

[–]devtesla 4 points5 points ago

Prices for hosting the site have come down, that's an old number.

I don't think we'd want to combine the sites because we are very different, but raddit's code is open source and owns. We might make use of it at some point.

[–]hoppet 6 points7 points ago

Yeah I agree with not merging but I do think a makeover would be nice at some point. As long as I get ample warning beforehand so I can back up my best posts and I mean that as not a joke lol.

[–]toasthaste 0 points1 point ago

Even if they can't be ported to a new site, you should save and repost your good posts (aka all of them)

[–]hoppet 3 points4 points ago

Also I've been learning a lot of server stuff at work lately so maybe after my FINAL SURGERY AAAAAAH if nothing's been done yet I can take a crack at that. I could put up a protoype on a VPS of my own or something even

[–]trimalchio 3 points4 points ago

i would really miss all our old posts; we'd have to download like a whole database and do something to port all that into the new site.

it would be amazing to get a new site where we could comment on original memes we memed a long time ago. it would be really nice if that brought them back from the dead like zombie threads.

threads that never die are fun.

[–]toasthaste 2 points3 points ago

Oh yeah heck, new comments bumping posts back to to the top of the "new" queue is something I didn't even realize I wanted

I know traditional forums do this, but I can't stand the traditional forum format. 's why I didn't join the fempire til it took on it's redditey form

[–]trimalchio 1 point2 points ago

yeah i feel like if we had a better grasp of how everything was put together initially it'd be so much easier to fiddle around with that stuff.

i feel like the biggest plus here is that at least we all really know the software well and what it's going to do with each thing.

[–]devtesla 6 points7 points ago

We'd never do something that would cause us to lose all the old posts. I would feel so bad ;_;

[–]trimalchio 4 points5 points ago

i mean i feel like we shouldn't be too attached. we all posted good and they're good posts and we should be proud of the posts we posted and the informative and helpful comments that we left but we can't hold on to them forever. because that sounds hard and we'll probably drop them at some point. but the real fempire is the friends we made along the way

[–]StudentRadical27 4 points5 points ago

Yeah Raddit code base sure does beat reinstalling/updating Reddit software like the eventual plan was at some point.

[–]toasthaste 3 points4 points ago

I'd fuckin love that. I wish I knew jack all about making websites, but if you need any art made hmu

[–]Dogmantra 10 points11 points ago

we're worth much more than $95 a month

devtesla alone is worth over eight hundred dollars a minute

[–]lizzles 4 points5 points ago

also i'm sorry if i came off as hostile a few days ago i was bein more flippant than i should have been and thats my bad

[–]KarlMarx[S] 4 points5 points ago

How can I hold a grudge against someone with such a cute username?

[–]lizzles 2 points3 points ago

:3 <3

[–]lizzles 4 points5 points ago

i believe on the patreon page it says its $60/mo but who knows how long ago that was updated. also don't think ive seen grey in forever

[–]trimalchio 5 points6 points ago

Where did you get that number from? It's changed a few times over the years and i thought it went down.

mostly it's because we have 4g of ram to keep everything in memcache running happily.

[–]lizzles 9 points10 points ago

more like memecache am i right?

[–]hoppet 7 points8 points ago

best post 2017

[–]oakreef 3 points4 points ago

honestly lizzles' posts are just too good in general

[–]trimalchio 7 points8 points ago

that is literally all it does

[–]KarlMarx[S] 4 points5 points ago

From here, r/meta. I tried to comment in the sticky but it wouldn't let me because it was too old so I was forced to make this thread.

[–]trimalchio 4 points5 points ago

looool that is still stickied who woulda known

i don't think many people see stickies here because we usually browse from /all/new

anywho, since that post i think we've switched hosts once, added a dev server, and reduced the hosting costs to like $40/mo? or something like that? idk i think if grey gets tired of paying for whatever the difference is they'll let us know.

also srsly hasn't been around in a bit but they're the one who fixes the site when it goes down. i think there was also talk of new features and fixing cruft but the site works fine and despite it's quirks it usually fixes itself.

[–]1vs 8 points9 points ago

look if we merged we'd be doin a lot of shitposts

that's why we luv this site

do you want shitposts

[–]KarlMarx[S] 5 points6 points ago

I crave your shitposts more than anything fam.

[–]oakreef 7 points8 points ago

let's just steal raddit's codebase!

[–]devtesla 2 points3 points ago

That's definitely something we'll look into, but no promises!

[–]KarlMarx[S] 3 points4 points ago

You totally should, it's completely free and open source. But if you combined your efforts it would benefit both sites imo.

[–]captain_cornflakes 3 points4 points ago

first thing i'd do is decrease the amount of fancy styling; on my laptop i can only see six links per page due to font size and padding. the design looks fancy, but sites like hackernews have much better information density on the screen without sacrificing functionality.

[–]KarlMarx[S] 2 points3 points ago

Can you code php?

[–]StudentRadical27 4 points5 points ago

We'll only merge if we can rewrite it in Haskell.

[–]1vs 5 points6 points ago

GOOD PLAN

[–]captain_cornflakes 8 points9 points ago

if raddit users can't stand the site culture then why would we want to merge

[–]KarlMarx[S] 2 points3 points ago

That's just one user.
