Why is it that 99.9% of these "queer issues explained easily" posts/infographics/whatever end up being "queer issues dangerously oversimplified and 'explained' using inaccurate and inappropriate metaphors"???

Also someone please tell me where the slushie that I'm drinking now fits into this paradigm

it doesn't fit into our current understanding of genders

destroy the coke-pepsi binary, but also understand that there are beverages who don't identify within the binary or as nonbinary

ur slushi is there

also tbh i like some of the things that explain queer stuff easily

not shit like this but more things that define terms without awful analogies like this

it's how i realized i was one of those evil queers u see on tv

Oh, yeah, there's definitely a right way to approach "big queer concepts explained in layperson's terms", and they're really great in helping people who don't experience those identities wrap their heads around new and unfamiliar concepts.

I think part of the trouble tends to come from when folks try to speak for groups or identities that they don't belong to. Like, as a queer cis woman, I'm more than happy to talk about the nuances of sexual and romantic attraction, but I know that when it comes to trans issues that it's best for me to just Stay In My Lane and let others who actually live that experience define and communicate what being trans really entails.

Tbh a lot of times I feel like I'm not The Ambassador of Trans People despite bein trans (or not cis? i'm havin lotsa gender-y thoughts rn) but I think you'd probably be fine offering some rudimentary education to friends who want to know

Like, I've explained things I'm not part of to friends, with the disclaimer that I'm not a part of the thing

That's probably the best possible way that you can approach a situation like that, tbh. I mean, it's not like there'll always conveniently be a person of X identity around if you ever get asked questions by others.

And there are always limits to how much we can testify to experiences of groups that we do belong to, especially keeping intersectionality in mind. When I talk about my experiences as a woman, for instance, I'm really only talking about my experiences as a white cis woman in a Western country. We all kind of have to rely on accurately relaying information that we've heard from others first-hand to reach an understanding of one another, I guess? And by no means are we ever obligated to be ambassadors to our identities -- it's exhausting!

But irl and online are so different. It's especially weird to see stuff like the OP on Tumblr, where there are so many queer folx who actively participate in dialogue and discussion.

Everything about this is wrong. Apparently coke and pepsi are genders, but "homosexuals" like one gender and straight people like the other one?

The "transsexual" one is blatantly incorrect and offensive. It's just saying that transgender people are just "x gender in y body", which is something I wish we could have moved past by now.

Also polyamorous people are not queer or oppressed lol txt it.
