Seems mostly an american thing to me. Christians in my country think god and evolution are real. There's not even a debate.

The only religious debate happening here is whether or not you think muslims are backwards.

Where do you live? I live in Finland where christians are likely rather liberal by US standards, but creationism has about 50% support. Similarily many muslim countries creationists are in the majority, so it's not a mostly American thing.

From Belgium. Majority of christians(most Roman Catholic) here believe in theistic evolution (so god caused evolution) rather than literal interpretation of genesis. Protestants and Jehovah's Witnesses seem to be more old fashioned and other denominations don't really exist here. Never heard of other denominations existing here, occasionally we'll get American Mormon missionaries visiting Belgium to unsuccesfully try convert people but that's about it. Don't know about muslims, they're very withdrawn, don't talk about their faith.

After all, we did have Georges Lemaître among our priests and stuff.

Here in Finland it's very common belief that among young liberals that the Catholic Church = Literally antiscience, which I guess is somewhat misplaced generalization from their official views on gay marriage, female priesthood and non-reproductive sexual acts. It was news here when Pope affirmed his church's stance on Big Bang and many of my Facebook friends were all 'FINALLY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS ARRIVED INTO THE 20TH CENTURY".

Eh, the church has always been slower than its followers. Except maybe in super religious towns who'd stop wiping their ass if a pope said it was improper.
