John Oliver grills Dustin Hoffman about sexual harassment allegations by trimalchioin news

[–]trimalchio[S] 1 point2 points ago

like seriously; i'm surprised dustin didn't back down based on how obviously he was being rebuked.

I guess the first person to yell was in support of dustin but after that it was everyone saying it was a good line of questioning.

[–]trimalchio[S] 1 point2 points ago

yeah, it's one thing to sit there and read about how dustin hoffman is an unapologetic creeper and his bullshit rationalizations for never even apologizing, but watching every random dude do that in the comment section is pretty unnecessary. Plus John Oliver isn't there to politely tell them that's fucked.

[–]trimalchio[S] 2 points3 points ago

Part of me kinda wants him to bring me a big piece that got broken like that so that I can drill into each piece and reset it with bolts and cover it with epoxy so i'd have this shattered table effect. It'd be tough to pull off but I think it'd look so cool to have a big table of broken pieces of granite all holding together with a nice clear surface that you can see through (and I guess see the bolts in?)

but yeah, this piece of granite was really nice. obviously my friend works doing granite countertops and thats why he has big ol piles of scrap granite.

The single weirdest thing about American online culture to me by StudentRadicalin just_post

[–]trimalchio 3 points4 points ago

I've heard varied things about people's actual high school experiences in the US; but the one unifying factor here is that we have this whole media experience of "high school" that is very american and is obviously kinda exported to the whole world with our media, but in america i think it seems more like a blueprint for how to view and shape your life and less like a weird trope of american media.

like, i've had friends say their high school experience was really typical cliquey high school and stuff, but like that was far from universal and not really what my experience was like unless you really try and force it. but i think more people try and force it into their memory of high school, and a lot of people behave like that just because they feel like it's what's supposed to be happening. like, i'm sure some of my hs friends would totally say they had a typical cliquey high school experience even though i dont.

oh but the club thing is totally true and part of the college admissions process; you have to stay after school and do bullshit stuff to make it seem like you're a well rounded person. which things you joined did kinda make a difference but mostly in who you saw after school and for how long. but the whole thing with it is college admissions forms have a like "extra curriculars" section and theoretically it can make up for deficiencies in other areas or make a difference at a selective school. which is just so ironic because being scheduled to death and having no time to live your life is probably a great way to be emotionally stunted by the time you arrive at university.

there's this sub-genre I'm trying to explore but I'm not sure if it has a name by ononononin music

[–]trimalchio 1 point2 points ago

idk if i'm really getting what you're getting at; those three examples seem really disparate to me. like; i get the whole disco influenced 70s rock thing, but that second one doesn't really scream that to me. the first one is kinda into that but i feel like there's more explicit mixing of that stuff too. and the last one just seems like the post-kraftwerk space rock thing. like i feel like each of these example bands were working in different genres and that like the overlap between the first two is certainly disco but i feel like it's pretty light in there anyways so are you meaning the kinda middle of the road disco era rock?

Interview horror story: Trying to explain that we can almost always sort in better than O(n*log(n)) time by 1vsin just_post

[–]trimalchio 2 points3 points ago

yeah; this is why you have to remember O(n log(n)) is a lower bound only for comparison based sort. Meaning a sort that is only able to be accomplished by a comparison function, not using a limited table of possible values.

Interview horror story: Trying to explain that we can almost always sort in better than O(n*log(n)) time by 1vsin just_post

[–]trimalchio 3 points4 points ago

the way I get around having to talk about this stuff is by being ultra pedantic with the definitions of problems. if the interviewer doesn't know what they're asking for then I will not give them an easy answer. If I ask a question about the dataset and they say that the only thing I know about it is that it's comparable integers I might remark about how that's a wild data type to accept but whatever I can give a bigO based off of that. like; I know that I have to put the math based smackdown into a socially acceptable place otherwise I can't sneak it in and have them not really give a fuck about the fact that I'm saying it unless they know what I'm talking about. Because obviously if they don't know what you're talking about it's not going to help anything. just like trying to interject awareness of technology into a technical discussion with "stakeholders" from upper management. (why are they called stakeholders if they aren't even aware of the stake's existence? we may never know)

ed: oh also the reason I don't think it's a problem to not give satisfaction to interviewers who don't know what they want is that I don't have any intention of becoming the person whose job it is to mind read specifications.
